If you want to know the latest on Hanna, Ike, and Josephine, these three widgets from the NOAA should be a start.

Hanna:

Ike:

Josephine:

Global Warming sure is making the weather more bizarre, uncertain, and unpredictable.

  1. I'm a huge fan of Wunderground.com. I get alets sent to my mobile de vice. With astounding accuracy.... they say things like a thunderstorm will hit your neighborhood in twenty minutes. And then it does. Of course this is the same Weather Underground that the Repubs are trying to associate with our Obama.... ....

  3. "Global Warming sure is making the weather more bizarre, uncertain, and unpredictable.": Freakin' liberal storms! The weather is always trying to validate the whole "global warming" myth. Why does it hate America so?

Gotta go... Rush is on! :)

  5. adam: Somebody should spank you for writing that.

todd: Maybe some naughty liberals should start accounts on Free Republic and spread rumors that the Weather Underground site is an evil commie plot. That would keep the knuckle walkers busy for a while.

  9. Apparently the weather isn't changing; at least not in ways that can be quantified.

Prometheus has the roundup (hat tip: Powerline ) As an example: "Over the long term, US hurricane landfalls have been declining."

  11. Gordon: When you cite articles on science, you need to be careful when the indirect source is an extreme right blog like Powerline. The far right tends to Google the first thing they can find to support their points of view without checking as to the validity or even coherence of the sources.

I've taken the trouble to look at the article and the source.

There were several problems with the original article that should have set off alarm bells if you analyzed it carefully.

The author has no training in climatology, meteorology, or any hard science. The author argued the thesis in a lawyerly fashion, rather than a scientific one. Passages were ripped out of context in a manner that included comparisons on various weather phenomena using inconsistent and inappropriate date ranges. The author did not even demonstrate adequately training in the scientific method.

My favorite invalid comparison was the one used to claim that droughts in the US aren't getting worse due to Global Warming. The author compared the 30's with today.

Anyone who has read a decent American history book or who had relatives who lived in Oklahoma or Kansas during that time knows about the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl was a period of drought that went from being normal to catastrophic due to inappropriate farming methods for that region left the topsoil vulnerable and left nothing to slow down the winds.

The fact that we are experiencing droughts even remotely comparable to the droughts of the 30s is a huge sign that Global Warming is worse than most people think.

Sloppy reasoning and poor scholarship like that would get a paper returned to the author in a decent, peer reviewed scientific journal. Most journals in the humanities would have sent it back too.
