Mormons Brag About Success of Meddling in Politics

Here's the Mormon Church press release:

Church Response to California Supreme Court Decision on Proposition 8

SALT LAKE CITY 26 May 2009 Today’s decision by the California Supreme Court is welcome. The issue the court decided was whether California citizens validly exercised their right to amend their own constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. The court has overwhelmingly affirmed their action.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes the deeply held feelings on both sides, but strongly affirms its belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The bedrock institution of marriage between a man and a woman has profound implications for our society. These implications range from what our children are taught in schools to individual and collective freedom of religious expression and practice.

Accordingly, the Church stands firmly for what it believes is right for the health and well-being of society as a whole. In doing so, it once again affirms that all of us are children of God, and all deserve to be treated with respect. The Church believes that serious discussion of these issues is not helped when extreme elements on both sides of the debate demonize the other.

The demonization argument by the Mormon hate church is ironic, given they and their members spent millions to fund a campaign on Proposition 8 which deliberately demonized lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people. Equally bizarre is that a racist, sexist, and heterosexist hate group like the Mormon Church would claim that they believe that everyone deserves "to be treated with respect." Talk about practicing the polar opposite of what they preach.

A big take home lesson of all of this is that religion has absolutely no legitimate role to play in politics. The Mormon Church has deliberately violated its tax exempt status and should have it revoked.

  1. TAX them all ! its sickening the pain and hate they peddle. WE in this country have the right NOT to believe, to believe what we want to - its a private matter. Sadly too, the fundamentalist Zealots of any faith, ruin all the faith traditions that do speak of love, charity, tolerance and non judgement. Its hard not to absolutely dispise them for the pain they have inflicted upon so many.

I look to Gandhi,Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu in order not to become as hateful towards them as they are to us, however this is harder everyday. They started this fight and we will finish it and get them back into their pews and out of our public policy

It really should be against the LAW to even quote the bible on any Congress floor in State or Federally - truly its unconstitutional in my opinion.

    - 35 yrs ago they were the lunatic fringe or "the 3rd chromosome people" as Rove referred to them..but cynically these huskster preachers, and their literalist idiot followers , hypocrits all, are exploited for their votes.

    How dare they brag !

If i won the lottery i would bring a lawsuit and sue the fuck out of them. The ACLU needs our donations, People for the American Way and the foundations that fight for the Seperation of Church and State.

its like we are living in a modern MEDIEVIL nightmere these days. And the venom they spew. Their willful ignornace..and self reinforcing delusional system is a hazard to public health. It creates an insane society and its hard to remain sane within it ...

yeah i could go on forver , thank you for a timely post , you are one hard working blogger my friend !

Bragging how dare they ! shame on them. EVIL BASTARDS.

  5. Proud Progressive, totally agree. I don't understand why churches are tax exempt in the first place. In a country that purports to separate church and state, why are churches given this state-granted exemption?

  6. Lew Scannon Says:
  7. I firmly believe that people who talk to invisible people are mentally ill, and once they start enforcing their fantasy world of cloud dwelling deities on the rest of us, then they should be forced to pay taxes like the rest of us as well.
