Cookie Cutter Bigotry

Posted by libhom Tuesday, September 21, 2010 2 comments

News reports about an anti immigrant party getting its first seats in the Swedish parliament have reinforced a pattern I have observed elsewhere over the past few months. Groups of people marketed as outsiders are the foci of raging hate campaigns.

The groups are defined by racial, religious, or ethnic lines. Far right politicians almost always are leading the charge. The scapegoating takes place in wealthy countries devastated by the Great Recession. It is all so similar, whether the targets are African Americans or Latinos in the US, Roma in France, or Muslims throughout the West.

Immigrant populations are especially convenient because they have less economic and political power to push back.

Scapegoating has long been a rather effective tactic used by power elites to maintain control, especially during bad economic times when people are angry. However, this is all so cookie cutter that it suggests some kind of coordination is involved between wealthy elites and rightist politicians, to their mutual benefit.

In any, case, we should not allow ourselves to be fooled by it.

Want to Watch Klan Brewer Make an Ass of Herself on TV?

Bigotry often is based on stupidity. "I have really did" publish this blog posting.

Brewer is such a ridiculous person that she was bound to be the target of satire. People are having fun with her already on YouTube.

It doesn't happen often, so I might as well say WooHoo to myself a few times because the Obama administration did something I strongly agree with. They finally sued Arizona to block its unconstitutional, scapegoating, and racist immigration law. (This doesn't effect Arizona's racist law banning ethnic studies in the public schools, by the way.) On those rare occasions when President Obama acts like a Democrat, a glimmer of hope comes through that he will do it more often. So far, those hopes have been mercilessly squashed.

cake with WTF written on itAnyway, an Arizona Democrat in Congress has shown that her state's Republicans don't have a monopoly on racism or blatant dishonesty. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-KKK) really went off the deep end in attacking the perfectly legitimate and reasonable lawsuit. (USA Today 7/6/10)

This lawsuit is a sideshow, distracting us from the real task at hand. A court battle between the federal government and Arizona will not move us closer to securing the border or fixing America's broken immigration system. The legal fights and boycotts are drawing focus and attention away from what has to be a policy-driven, substantive debate.

Washington failed us on this issue again today, and Arizonans have had enough. The White House and Congress need to start developing a better approach to border security and immigration reform, working with us instead of against us. Our law enforcement and communities are at risk right now -- this is a time for solutions, not new obstacles.

Let's unpack this filthy suitcase. As Dusty at It's My Right to Be Left of Center points out, crime in the Hate State is down 15% since 2006, violent crime by 22%. In May, a delegation of police chiefs said that the Arizona law would cause problems for law enforcement.

Also, it's Arizona's hateful and ridiculous law which is obstructing "a policy-driven, substantive debate" on immigration. The boycotts and lawsuits that this racist jackass is complaining about are bringing the issue back to what it is really about: racism and scapegoating.

Kirkpatrick also creates a sense of false urgency on the whole issue of immigration, which is one of the least important issues facing the country. Congress and the White House have much bigger issues to address than a minor problem which is being exaggerated wildly in order to scapegoat illegal aliens who can't vote instead of holding wealthy and corporate interests accountable for the enormous real pain they are causing middle class and poor Americans.

Of course, John "Keating Five" McCain and Jon Kyl were desperate to prove that Arizona Republicans could join in on this racist feeding frenzy too. This is exactly what you would expect. A kept man like John McCain whose multimillionaire wife has multiple houses would like nothing more to distract people from even thinking about reversing decades of tax cuts for his rich wife and the rest of her ilk.

A state where Democrats like Kirkpatrick are as over the top racist as the Republicans? Is that supposed to make me want to take a vacation or go to a conference there? Being surrounded by that kind of hatred and bigotry isn't even slightly inviting to me.

Censored News Stories 6-10

Posted by libhom Wednesday, December 10, 2008 1 comments

As part of this ongoing series on the last years Top 25 censored news stories according to Project Censored, I thought I would highlight an excellent resource of theirs:

List of Links to Independent News Sources

Now, here are items 6-10.

6: The Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act

In a startling affront to American freedoms of expression, privacy, and association, the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act (H.R. 1955) passed the House on October 23, 2007, by a vote of 404–6. The Senate is currently considering a companion bill, S. 1959. The act would establish a national commission and a university-based “Center for Excellence” to study and propose legislation to prevent the threat of “radicalization” of Americans.

Author of the bill Jane Harman (D-CA) explains, “We’re studying the phenomenon of people with radical beliefs who turn into people who would use violence.”

UPDATE BY JESSICA LEE

While civil liberties and religious freedom groups credit independent journalists and grassroots activists with helping to stall the passage of the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, some members of Congress continue to push for Internet censorship and racial profiling as necessary to prevent “homegrown terrorism.”

The House of Representatives approved the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act in October 2007 by a 404-6 vote, but widespread opposition forced the Senate to shelve the bill. As of June 1, 2008, no vote was scheduled or expected during the current legislative year.

7: Guest Workers Inc.: Fraud and Human Trafficking
While the guest worker program in the United States has been praised and recommended for expansion by President Bush, and is likely to be considered by Congress as a template for future immigration reform, human rights advocates warn that the system seriously victimizes immigrant workers. Workers, labor organizers, lawyers, and policy makers say that the program, designed to open up the legal labor market and provide a piece of the American dream to immigrants, has instead locked thousands into a modern-day form of indentured servitude. Congressman Charles Rangel has called the guest worker program “the closest thing I’ve ever seen to slavery.”

8: Executive Orders Can Be Changed Secretly
On December 7, 2007, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, disclosed on the floor of the US Senate that he had declassified three legal documents of the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) within the Department of Justice that state:

1. An executive order cannot limit a president. There is no constitutional requirement for a president to issue a new executive order whenever he wishes to depart from the terms of a previous executive order. Rather than violate an executive order, the president has instead modified or waived it.

2. The President, exercising his constitutional authority under Article II, can determine whether an action is a lawful exercise of the President’s authority under Article II.

3. The Department of Justice is bound by the President’s legal determinations.

9: Iraq and Afghanistan Vets Testify
Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans are coming forward to recount the brutal impact of the ongoing occupations. An investigation by the Nation (July 2007) and the Winter Soldier hearings in Silver Spring, Maryland, in March 2008, which was organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War and brought together over 300 veterans, have made their experiences public. Soldiers’ harrowing testimony of atrocities they witnessed or participated in directly indicate a structural problem in the US military that has created an environment of lawlessness. Some international law experts say the soldiers’ statements show the need for investigations into potential violations of international law by high-ranking officials in the Bush administration and the Pentagon. Though BBC predicted that the Winter Soldier event would dominate headlines around the world that week, there was a near total back-out on this historic news event by the US corporate media.

10: APA Complicit in CIA Torture
When in 2005 news reports exposed the fact that psychologists were working with the US military and the CIA to develop brutal interrogation methods, American Psychological Association (APA) leaders assembled a task force to examine the issue. After just two days of deliberations, the ten-member task force concluded that psychologists were playing a “valuable and ethical role” in assisting the military. A high level of secrecy surrounding the task force prohibited disclosure of the proceedings and of members and attendees. It wasn’t until a year later that the membership was finally published on Salon.com, revealing that six of nine voting members were from the military and intelligence agencies with direct connections to interrogations at Guantánamo and CIA black sites that operate outside of Geneva Conventions.

Censored Update

Members of the American Psychological Association have voted to prohibit consultation in the interrogations of detainees held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, or so-called black sites operated by the Central Intelligence Agency overseas, the association said on Wednesday.

The vote, 8,792 to 6,157 in a mail-in balloting concluded Monday, may help to settle a long debate within the profession over the ethics of such work. Psychologists have helped military and C.I.A. interrogators evaluate detainees, plan questioning strategy and judge its psychological costs. The association’s ethics code, while condemning a list of coercive techniques adopted in the Bush administration’s antiterrorism campaign, has allowed some consultation “for national security-related purposes.”

Commentary and Analysis

All Items
All of these items have a common thread. Corporate media outlets are generally covering up misconduct commited by the Bush regime or with their encouragement or orders. It's interesting to note how most Americans are being kept in the dark about things that should make Americans cringe with shame. No wonder most people in this country are perplexed at the anti American sentiments abroad.

Item 9:
Project Censored referenced the efforts of Pacifica radio station KPFK and CorpWatch in their War Comes Home site, which has an audio archive of the Winter Soldier testimony. The Pacifica stations carried live coverage of the Winter Soldier hearings, in contrast to corporate media which censored the story. The text archives from Iraq Veterans Against the War also were mentioned.

I remember listening to Talk Back on WBAI a while back, and a caller had an excellent point on immigration. On a cold winter's day, he joked that a Jamaican like him certainly didn't come to New York for the weather. He left his homeland because of a lack of economic opportunity.

So much of the rhetoric on illegal immigration focuses on what pulls immigrants to the United States (jobs, more freedom, etc.). Little attention is paid to the factors that pressure people to risk their lives to illegally immigrate to the US. Policies which reduce those pressures would do more to reduce the levels of illegal immigration in this country than expanding failed approaches that focus on punishing desperate immigrants. Those policies are liberal ones.

Globalist trade policies are devastating the poor majority in Haiti. Raj Patel on Democracy Now! 7/31/08

And Haiti actually stands for a number of other countries in the Western Hemisphere, in Sub-Saharan Africa, in Asia, that have been forced to liberalize their economies and are now hostage to the international price rises. And in Haiti, the consequences were that the government was not allowed to support its rice producers. It wasn’t allowed to invest in agriculture. So, in the 1980s, Haiti produced the majority of its own rice, and now in Haiti almost all the rice comes from the United States. And that’s the sort of singular consequence of the intersection between free trade and—or so-called free trade and development policy in developing countries.

Trade policies which have destroyed Haitian agriculture, caused malnutrition, and impoverished Haitians have forced many people to go to the US illegally. The only alternative for many immigrants from that nation is starvation for themselves and their families. Yet, corporate media ignore the role of corporate controlled trade policies.

There also is a structural problem resulting from earlier events in Haitian history which contributes tremendously to the constant state of economic crisis in Haiti. In 1825, Haiti was forced to pay 90 million Francs to France to compensate that country for the slaves that the French would no longer own. In order to get its independence, Haiti had to pay the equivalent of over $20 billion today. Today's government spending in Haiti is currently under $250 million per year.

Juan Gonzalez on Democracy Now! pointed out in 2004 that "Haiti spent most of the 19th century paying off the reparations to France." That has kept the country from building wealth and created a cycle of debt that has kept Haiti economically hobbled.

If France would pay Haiti back for its reprehensible 19th century windfall, that would go a long way to giving Haiti a chance to repair the damage done to its economy.

Efforts by the elected government of Haiti to get justice from France and the general desire of the Bush regime to meddle in other countries' affairs led to a Franco American coup in 2004. Subsequent Haitians governments have kept quiet on the subject.

The coup illustrates an important point. People on the right often blame poverty in other nations on the policies of the governments there. This claim ignores how often rich countries intervene to prevent poor countries from acting in their national interests.

Haiti also has had food riots this year, which have led to political instability.
The problem of skyrocketing food costs is hardly Haiti's alone, and the causes are mainly found in the policies of the Bush regime and a Congress too willing to act as a rubberstamp.

One of the biggest sources of food inflation is the much higher cost of petroleum. The main factor in increasing oil prices is instability due to the Bush regime's Iraqtastrophe and its threats against two other major oil producers, Iran and Venezuela. Oil prices have fallen somewhat, but nowhere near as far as they were a year ago. This is primarily due to a toning down of rhetoric by the Bush people during the election year and the Iraqi government's very public lobbying for a timetable for withdrawal of foreign troops form their country. Much of the corporate media's coverage has focuses on nameless faceless speculators as the cause of high oil and gas prices, but such coverage has ignored the geopolitical factors that are causing such rampant speculation in the first place. The spotlight is on symptoms, not root causes.

Another source of food instability for Haiti is the US push for biofuels. Biofuels are being sold as a cure all for energy independence and global warming. Much of the critique of biofuels has focuses on clearing land to produce such fuels. Even when biofuels come US corn repurposed from food to ethanol, biofuels don't do much to help fight climate change. Our methods of agriculture use a lot of CO2 emitting energy in order to produce the required fertilizer and pesticides.

Regardless of the effects of biofuels on the atmosphere, the increased demand for corn certainly is squeezing out food supplies for people in poor countries. Haiti, like so much of the world, suffers terribly from irresponsible policy decisions in Washington.

If you haven't learned about the effects of US policies on Haiti and Haitian immigration from corporate media outlets, you should consider the benefits to corporate interests in keeping you ill informed on the subject. Desperately poor Haitians are willing to work at very low wages, both in Haiti and in America. That means higher profits for corporations that exploit them.

We are constantly brainwashed to hit down at people whose only offense is being placed in a position to where they are forced to move to the US. We should be hitting up at the wealthy and corporate interests that are making Haitians miserable while ripping Americans off.

Instead of ranting and raving about illegal aliens like Lou Dobbs does, it would make much more sense to call for the World Trade Organization to be abolished and for countries like Haiti to have the opportunity to set rational trade policies in their own national interests. France should be pressured to pay up for what it owes Haiti. We need to redouble our efforts to call for an end to the occupation of Iraq and for an end to Bush-regime bullying of oil producing nations. Federal subsidies for biofuels should be abolished, and the money should be used for additional support to genuinely renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, geothermal, wind power) and to expand public transportation.

People should be migrating to the United States only because they really want to. It is the job of liberals to imagine and support policies that can actually make that come true.

Lou Dobbs Attacks the Middle Class

Posted by libhom Sunday, July 27, 2008 6 comments

Universal healthcare is one of the most important issues for middle class Americans. It would provide healthcare for middle class people whose jobs have been shipped abroad by Lou Dobbs' corporate sponsors and a safety net for middle class people who face similar job losses in the future.

Helping the uninsured get beyond their absolute dependence on emergency rooms for medical care would make everyone safer who really needs emergency care.

Lou Dobbs doesn't care.

I would have stopped watching that racist corporate panderer entirely if my gym didn't have CNN on all the time. The propaganda fest Dobbs plays out while I'm working out is amazing.

Dobbs is attacking universal healthcare with a truly reprehensible tactic, demonizing people who support including illegal aliens. This is a classic bait and switch. Dobbs wants to gets people so worked up over illegal immigration that they won't listen to people who want to get healthcare for the uninsured.

Universal healthcare is literally a life and death issue. More than 18,000 people in this country die each year because they don't have access to health coverage. Playing these kinds of games with the lives of middle class Americans who are getting screwed by Dobbs' corporate sponsors shows Dobbs' hypocrisy in claiming that he cares about the middle class.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) recently sent me an email defending their organization from an attack on that organization designed to distract Dobbs' viewers from his real, anti-middle class agenda.

Tim Carpenter, PDA's National Director, said:

On CNN last night, Lou Dobbs was in the anti-immigrant zone. Nothing new about that--except this time he went after PDA.

“Tonight,” he intoned, “a political action committee called Progressive Democrats of America, PDA, is pushing a major new plank for the Democratic Party. PDA wants what it calls health care for all, including illegal aliens. One leading member of Congress has already signed on.”

A report from a CNN correspondent was briefly matter-of-fact: “Progressive Democrats of America wants to end the Iraq war and plow the war funding into setting up a system of universal health care.”

And I got a few seconds on camera, explaining: “We believe in health care for all.... Our goal fundamentally is to make sure that all of us have health care, all of us within the U.S. borders have health care.”

That concept made host Lou Dobbs nearly apoplectic, as he soon let viewers know. “I mean this is utterly and completely outrageous,” he said.

The idea that “illegal aliens” should have health care as a human right made Dobbs go ballistic. “I'll just speak for myself,” he said, “I mean, it is unbelievable that any elected representative of the people would provide that level of benefit to citizens--to people who are not even citizens of this country.”

What set off Dobbs’ eruption? Apparently it was his correspondent reporting that PDA “is urging the Democratic Party to adopt a plank at the party's convention in Denver, guaranteeing accessible health care for all.”

I think it is great that PDA is fighting back against Dobbs' garbage. I also think it is high time that middle class Americans unite to fight back against Lou Dobbs, who is a tool of the superrich who does everything in his power to distract and divert us from our real enemies.

Sadly, Dobbs' attack on PDA is part of a broader campaign by Dobbs' to deny healthcare to middle class and poor Americans. He loves ranting against universal healthcare on a regular basis these days.

I remember when CNN stood for Cable News Network, not Corporate Nuzzling Network.

Pathetic.

This is from Democracy Now a while back, but it still is relevant today. Kucinich makes an excellent point about how NAFTA and the WTO create poverty in Mexico which in turn forces many people there to immigrate to the US. It would be nice if the only people migrating to the US from Mexico and other countries were coming here because they wanted to, not due to artificially generated, desperate poverty.

A similar point can be made about Haiti. If "our" government would stop supporting the murderous oligarchs and overthrowing democratically elected governments there, far fewer Haitians would be fleeing political persecution and horrific poverty.

It is odd that most people have yet to discover the link between climate change and future illegal immigration.

Here is a list of some of the consequences of Global Warming from the National Resources Defense Council and StopGlobalWarming.org.

  • increased droughts

  • more wildfires and more devastating wildfires

  • more intense rainstorms leading to increased flooding

  • more deadly heat waves

  • more powerful hurricanes

  • a rising sea level, flooding away many coastal and island areas

  • now primarily tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and encephalitis will become far more common farther north

StopGlobalWarming.org also points out that the majority of the world's population lives on or near the coasts, magnifying the human impacts of global warming.

It should not require much consideration to see that even if only some of these things happen, many people outside of the US will lose their livelihoods and even their homes. Global economic pressures dictate that many of them will come to America out of necessity, not desire.

The underlying substance on the debate on immigration is whether the US has levels that are low enough for us to benefit or if our economy has reached a saturation point which would require reducing the level of immigration. Most people who think that we have yet to reach that saturation point would be concerned by the potential of tens or perhaps hundreds of millions of desperate Global Warming refuges arriving here, especially if our economy suffers anywhere near as much as expected from climate change.

Even people who disagree with the premise of a saturated economy would generally prefer that people come to the US out of a desire to live here, not an unwanted necessity based on economic deprivation caused by Global Warming.

I find it sadly ironic that some anti-immigration activists are obsessed with punitive measures, walls, fences, etc.,. These will have a minor effect in comparison with what climate change can do to the level of illegal immigration to the United States, unless serious efforts are made to decrease CO2 emissions. Some of the anti-immigrant folks even mock the science of global warming in much the same way that the far right mocks evolution.

They will be sorry.
