Muslim 911 Victims

Posted by libhom Tuesday, August 31, 2010

About.com's site on Islam is the source, and they include biographical information on some of the victims.

Most people who live or work in NYC aren't the least surprised to hear or read about Muslim victims killed by the terrorists. We interact with Muslims on a daily basis. It's perfectly ordinary for us.

However, for people who know less about the city, this may be a surprise. In any case, keeping this in mind gives one a different perspective on the efforts of the far right to lump all Muslims in our country with the Islamic extremists.

  1. I thought that almost 70 Bangladeshis were killed alone. Maybe many of them managed to get out? What these teabaggers don't know is that many of the victims weren't Americans: Brits, Japanese, and other foreigners worked at the Towers. Whatever. Facts are inconvenient things.

And I must share this: Shortly after 9/11, I had a doctor's appointment. I take cabs to the doctor's office because I hate to be late. I got a cab and the cabbie wanted to talk. He was Bangladeshi and muslim. He wanted to assure me that true muslims did not believe in the acts of the hijackers. He said that it was against Islam to attack innocents. Etc. He professed his love for the US and said that if W asked him to go to the place the planners were to get them, he would volunteer. He was in tears by the end of the ride. I felt so badly for him. Cursed at by assholes, no doubt, and cabbies got hit after 9/11--fewer riders and little income. So I wildly overtipped him. And the cabbie back. I'll never forget how pained that poor man was. I'm sure it means nothing to those assholes who have never been anywhere near the WTC site but think they have the right to paint all of us as simple-minded douchebags.

  3. Thank you for bringing attention to this. People of many backgrounds died during the 9/11 attacks, even if public discourse does not always acknowledge this fact.
