Seven Years of Iraqtastrophe

Posted by libhom Friday, March 19, 2010

Today is the worst day of the year. It's the seventh anniversary of the beginning of the war on Iraq, a war that has cost the people of that country over 1.3 million lives. It's cost us hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars. Over 4000 of our troops have been killed in an effort to keep Iraq under the dominion of international oil corporations, arms merchants, and mercenary corporations.Iraq Deaths Estimator

Remember when Barack Obama was running for president. In the primaries, he made opposition to the Iraq War. When the President began his tenure in office, he announced a phased withdrawal. What's actually happened?

We have fewer regular troops in Iraq now, but the increase in the presence of mercenaries paid by "our" government more than makes up for their numbers. The killing goes on. The rigged elections go on. The profits for war profiteers go on, and on, and on.

Where are the "Democrats" on this? Why haven't they cut off funding for this illegal and unAmerican war? Does it matter who we vote for?

This war is one of the main reasons why the Great Recession has been so long and so deep. Economic deprivation is the main reason why the Democrats are doing so badly in the polls. Yet, Democrats won't do anything to stop this war.

This is insanity.

  2. I'd known about mercenaries there, but it had slipped my mind. Thanks for refreshing it.
I couldn't vote for a war supporter, the obscenity of the war was the premier issue. I voted for Paul in the primary then Nader in the general. I could never vote for a guy who described the invasion of Iraq as "dumb".

  4. The war in Iraq is a violation of international law, and the Bush administration should be punished by the ICC. The reasons to invade were ALL lies, making all those lives lost and dollars wasted unnecessary. It has not ended terrorism, nor has it made us any safer.
As for the Democratic Party, they were complicit in the starting of the war by refusing to act like an opposition party and helped give Bush/Cheney the blank check they needed to send troops over there.
The media is as complicit by not only ignoring the protests of millions of Americans (as opposed to the attention they give to thousands protesting health care reform), but by repeating the Bush administration lies used to gain public support for the war as opposed to investigating them.

  6. By an irony of luck, I know one of the people behind the "Hopkins" estimate of the the Iraqi deaths. He has great integrity and he has the rare mix of academic and field operational skills. Is the number right? It's a survey, but it's a lot closer to a million than it is to a hundred thousand.
